DNA Testing

We at Love My Cavoodle genetically test all our parents for hereditary genetic diseases through Orivet Genetic Pet Care company. This is to ensure that we breed the healthiest pups possible and that all parents are matched up correctly to make this happen.

It is well researched that purebred dogs have a higher chance of passing on genetic inherited disorders. This is due to the fact that purebred dogs were originally bred for their appearance and temperament rather than health factors. It is also quite difficult with some breeds (like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) to be 100% clear of all inherited genetic disorders. It is for this reason why it is detrimental that our mums (dam/bitch) are matched up perfectly with our dads (Sire/Stud) to ensure the offspring are not “positive” to any disorders and at the very most, in very limited cases, may be “carriers” to which they will never be affected by the disorder. Both breeders and purchasers need to fully understand that breeding dogs that may be “positive” or “carriers” to a genetic disorder, need to be paired correctly to eliminate the risk of the disorder being passed down.

Vet Check

At six-seven weeks old, all pups are examined by our vet. The following are assessed during their vet check: body condition, coat, temperament, heart and lungs, ears, eyes, mouth and teeth, abdomen, limbs and joints, testes (in males) and hernias.

Worming

All our pups are wormed with “Drontal Worming Suspension for Puppies” every 2 weeks from 2 weeks old until 8 weeks old. Their worming treatment then changes to NexGard Spectra, which is an all-in-one treatment that covers, intestinal worms, heart worm, fleas, ticks and mites, all in one chew (which they all love!) All pups purchased will take home with them in their puppy packs a NexGard Spectra tablet/chew that will protect them for one month.

Microchip

At six-seven weeks, when pups get vet checked, they also get microchipped. A tiny chip is injected underneath their skin at the back of their neck. This is then used to identify the pup in case they go missing. The chip is registered with Central Animal Records and will have all the new owners details once the pup is picked up.

All Councils and Veterinary Clinics have microchip scanners and are able to scan each pup/dog to access the information registered on the chip. This makes getting your beloved pet back to you sooner and seamlessly.

It is very important to update your dogs microchip details if any of your contact details change, both with Central Animal Records and your Local Council. All pets  MUST be registered with your local council. Please look up your local councils website to register your new pup.

Vaccination

At six-seven weeks old when pups are vet checked and microchipped, they also have their first of three vaccinations. This is a C3 Vaccination (3-in-1) which covers the following life-threatening diseases: Parvovirus, Distemper and Adenovirus (Hepatitis) These are CORE Vaccines – those that all dogs should receive as these protect against potentially fatal diseases.

It is recommended that pups take the C5 Vaccination (5-in1) for their second and third vaccinations to have protection from Parainfluenza Virus and Bordetella Bronchiseptica (both contribute to canine cough) as well what the C3 protects them from. These additional 2 vaccines are NON-CORE vaccines – determined to be taken based on an assessment of the dogs location and lifestyle. Highly recommended for dogs who regularly come into contact with other dogs, such as on walks, at the park, at the beach, daycare, puppy school or boarding.

Pups will need yearly boosters – C5 highly recommended but C3 as a necessity.

PLEASE NOTE: As advised by our vets, pups first vaccination cannot be C5. Only second and third can be C5 and their annual boosters.
